CHENNAI: Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Virugambakkam, thought that his New Year's celebration was heading to an unhappy ending when he was stopped by traffic policemen on Kodambakkam High Road.
What added to his worry was that he was too tipsy to drive his vehicle. But to his surprise, the policemen asked him to give the number of either a friend or a relative.

One of them then called up the person and asked him to come over and drive Ramesh back home. They did not fine Ramesh, but sent him home after wishing him a "happy New Year".
Like Ramesh, many who were stopped for drunk driving in the early hours of the new year were surprised as the traffic police thought up a novel method to prevent drunk driving. And it turned out to be a huge success. There was not even a single fatal accident related to revelry reported in the city limits on Friday night and Saturday morning.
